Cortina head gasket question

I recall some discussion regarding head gaskets not long ago.
Last weekend I blew one of the composition type with a metal fire ring.
Someone mentioned that they had experienced trouble with that type.
I have previously blown the expensive copper/asbestos style too and am about 
to order a solid copper unit.  Does anyone have experience with them?
We are talking about a 1500 Ford.
