A number of years ago when I was getting into Formula Ford racing, I
bought a mid-70's Lincoln four door for a tow vehicle. It was huge, had
a 454 engine I think, it was maroon with a white leather interior, and
was previously owned by a Mary Kay distributor, so the effect of smell
and the effect of the lights going on at night on that white leather
interior gave a unique appearance (ahem).
I installed a hitch and air shocks and had at it.
It was just awful.
When negotiating a corner, I could give it suggestions via the steering
wheel but never knew if it heard or felt it, the rear was too stiff when
not towing, the needle on the gas gauge moved faster than the one on the
speedometer, etc but it did look wonderful.
It had a habit of suddenly shutting off all lights at once, while
travelling down the Interstate at night. Startling to say the least.
Some master relay somewhere. After a few minutes they would light up
suddenly, about in synch with my heartbeat finally slowing down again.
It sure cured me of wanting to use a 'vintage' vehicle for towing.
