I used white contact paper (in the 60s) for numbers and had sponsor names and
crew names painted by a sign painter. The contact paper had the advantage of
easy alteration. They were a major pain to put on, however-- flimsier than
current vinyl graphics. When I did have the numbers painted on I later
regretted it, as it made repainting the cars difficult (ghost outline of old
number).
