Dear Listers,
Here is an update on the Titan Formula Car Reunion and Formula Ford
Festival, which will be part of the VSCDA's race weekend at Gingerman
Raceway, South Haven, Michigan, July 6-9, 2000. The Clash of the Titans
Feature race takes place on Saturday afternoon. The winning FB and FF
drivers will receive their award from Charles Lucas, and Roy Thomas.
The Titan VIP's attending the reunion include:
Charles Lucas. Founder of Charles Lucas Engineering (CLE) which later
became Titan Cars. Charles was a highly rated F3 driver and member of
the BRDC. Charles Lucas, Piers Courage and Jonathan Williams were school
chums who teamed up to win many F3 races in 1966. In 1967 Colin Chapman
recruited CLE to run the works Lotus F3 team. The team won the F3
championship, but had a falling out with Chapman which lead to the
construction of Titan cars. Charles owned and raced a Masi 250F
successfully in historic racing during the 60's. Charles sold the
company in 1971 to Roy and Diana Thomas, and went on to work for Lord
Hesketh's F1 team featuring James Hunt.
Roy Thomas. Car designer and race engineer who learned chassis design
from Les Redmond. Les Redmond was the designer for the Checkered Flag
Gemini Formula Juniors. Roy was instrumental in the design of the very
successful Gemini Mk3. Roy left the "Flag" to start his own race
engineering business, and was involved with the short lived Scirocco F1
team. However, Charles Lucas hired Roy to run his racing operation. One
of Roy's innovations included the down draft modification to the
Cosworth MAE engine which soon dominated F3 from 1968 to 1970. Roy also
designed all of the Titan chassis including the outstanding Mk6.
Derek Lawrence. Titan works formula ford driver. Was runner up to Ian
Taylor at the inaugural FF Festival at Brands Hatch in 1972. In 1973
Derek won the Festival in a Dulon and was FF2000 Festival champ at
Brand's in 1975. Derek won many FF championships in the UK and was the
master of Silverstone in 1972 winning 6 out of 7 championship races.
Jim Harrell. Jim dominated the Central Division in 1971 with his Mk6
Titan, and topped off a great year by winning the Runoff's. Jim was very
successful in 1972 with his Mk6, but suffered from some bad luck during
the Runoff's. Jim currently owns Nostalgia Motor Cars.
Fred Opert. Titan's east coast importer and motor racing legend.
Pierre Phillips. Titan's west coast importer. Pierre is still very much
involved in motor racing.
