When I bought by ex-SCCA Bugeye, it has a steel plate about a foot high welded
into
the driver's side inside footwell. I left it there too.
I do seem to recall someone who raced Sprites back in the 60's and early 70's
saying
he finally quit when SCCA wanted him to put a blanket on the transmission. He
said
it wasn't necessary.
