It depends on how the original bastardization was done. Generally, since
the '63 Spider never came with a 1750, something was done to the car to
get one in. You can use a '63 trans on a 1750. You can use a 1750 trans
in an early car if you use the early bell housing. The later trannies are
more robust. Either can be lightened. What you need to do is make sure
the early bell housing is still in place. This is easy. If the bottom of
the bell housing has a sheet metal cover and a lever sticking out the
bottom, then you have the early clutch, early bell housing, and probably
an early flywheel on the 1750. The 1600 should go in fairly easily. The
1600 should come with the correct spacer (I call it a block plate). Again
it depends on how the original swap was done. They may have used a 1600
block plate on the 1750 to go with the early bell housing. The headers
may need to be changed as the 1750 is a bit taller. 1750 headers on a
1600 may hang too low, but the difference is only about 3/4". 1600 headers
are available.
You also need to spell it A-L-F-A, or they'll never let you on the track.
