Irv: Don't down rate your "unscientific experience". Your obversations about a convertible with the top up and top down are exactly correct and based on accepted principles of aerodyanmics. It is one of the reasons why many open top race cars have very short wind screens. The windscreen on a convertible is essentially a flat plate which is very draggy as compared to a box with the same frontal area and a windward depth of twice its height.
