+ TVR Griffith 400
+ Snorting HiPo 289 and Ford tranny with cheap parts from your nearest
+ garage.
+ All other parts borrowed from something you drove as a kid.
+ Competent/strong tube steel frame, fiberglass body.
The Griffith 400 is currently considered to be the car to beat in the
FIA race series over here in Europe, and one won the Flemings (major UK
historic series) last year too. They're basically a Cobra that weighs less,
costs less, and has worse brakes! The only downside is that they need a lot
of work to be a usable race car.
If you're willing to spend a bit more money, then a Morgan Plus Four
Supersports would be another contender. These are basically a lighter
weight, tuned engine competition special based on the standard Plus Four,
and run either a TR3 or TR4 engine.
They're historically significant too: One won its class at Le Mans in
'62, beating off the work's Triumph team, and several Porsches, and their
successful career continued up until the mid-Sixties.
The factory supported cars tended to run with a clip-on hardtop, making
them a viable all-weather car, although luggage space would be rather tight.
