Jim, I definitely like the look of an open-face helmet but prefer the
safety of the full-face style. Recently I saw a full face helmet that
was painted in such a manner that from 10 feet away it looked like an
open faced helmet. This is similar to the open face helmets that many
police motorcycle riders wear which are painted to resemble the old
style "bowl" with leather straps covering the ears while in reality they
are wearing a modern open face helmet. I have seen "vintage" pictures
of old time racers wearing leather football helmets. I, for one, don't
want to resurrect that look or the shirt sleeves, chinos and penny
loafers sported by many amateurs in the 50's.
