I just can't resist telling this true story.
In the 60's, Lloyd Barton (Black Bart) and Sammy Eller of Danville,
Illinois (MY HOME TOWN!) borrowed a Porsche powered Cooper to race at
Elkhart on the condition that they supply the motor. They had a VW Van
as a tow car.
They worked late at Shakespeare Motors (another story) so they got a
late start and the engine wasn't together yet. They got a friend to
drive the van with race car trailer in tow while they sat cross legged
on the floor and assembled the engine. They stopped along the way and
installed the engine, rolled the race car off the trailer 30 miles from
the track, and drove both to the track to run in the engene.
