This sounds like another little-old-lady story.  ;=) Wheels can be
X-rayed, but I'm not sure if they do it with a powder coating on top.  A
friend of mine came across some old Magnesium wheels from an obscure
maker (VERY obscure).  They were so light you could lift them with two
fingers.  Upon X-raying, they were found to be full of voids.  Minilites
would surely be of higher quality, but you never know.

For MY money, Panasport Lites would fit the bill.
