My 1959 MGA-1600 coupe #440 had the same problem - leaking rear axle seals.
Replaced the hub seal, polished the axle housing where the hub seal rides,
replaced the o-ring and the paper gasket between the hub and the flange of the
axle and cleaned the vent on top of the axle housing. Still had a small leak
in the hub and the vent was now leaking oil all over the axle housing. Took
out the vent and replaced it with a nipple, fitted a 2 foot 3/8 id hose to
the nipple, left enough slack so the hose was not under tension when the rear
moves and fitted the free end to the frame. The free end was also fitted with a
small clear plastic fuel filter. So far after 3 years only a tiny amt of oil
has made it up to the filter and no oil has leaked from the hub.
Copied this setup from a dirt track racing friend of mine.
