Well, you current system sounds just like mine... I have a pair of 24" bullet
glass packs with Jag V-12 chrome resonator tips at the back. It sounded
wicked in the beginning, and still looks unique. But glass degrades pretty
quick, and now it's just insane. Will be immediately replacing that when I
get it out this spring!. So that's my cautionary tale about using "any small
muffler".
For many years the Corvair turbo muffler was a "standard" budget performance
trick favored by young Datsun 510 owners and others of their elk (early leaders
of the Sports Compact Car revolution). I think it survives pretty much intact
today as the Walker Dynomax. I'm afraid its too fat for our cars, but they
work fine on my '72 Wagoneer. Loud but mellow, and no loss of muffling over
time until they rust through.
My personal plan is to keep my dual system, but use a dual inlet/outlet
Flowmaster. They will build you what you want, or at least they used to. I
don't have any real noise restrictions to deal with, except to prevent my own
hearing loss.
I don't know about the headers fitting in the chassis (engine interface,
obviously no problem :) But the original header and Y-pipe (your thingy) are
standard TR-6. Well, they are on my car.
So if the headers are intended to mate with a stockish TR6 exhaust system, I'd
say it's worth a try.
Emissions, on a '74? What does that consist of? My '77 has an air pump and
EGR, and that is all. My only secret is to fully seal any and all vacuum
connections. Any vacuum leak truly upsets my hydrocarbon output. Including the
brake booster. It took me two years to find that one...
