The oft overlooked return path.=C2=A0 Since the car is starting one would =
presume the ground is in good nick but perhaps he is relying on the alterna=
te ground paths such as the throttle linkage and the choke cables.=C2=A0 Bu=
t if they work well enough to run the starter motor they should be ample fo=
r the charging circuit.=C2=A0=20

But this does raise the question.=C2=A0 When measuring the voltage where ar=
e the meter probes placed?=C2=A0 In particular the negative probe?=C2=A0 Is=
it on the engine block?=C2=A0 Battery negative terminal?=C2=A0 Bumper?=C2=
=A0 What happens if you measure the voltage difference between the engine b=
lock and the battery negative terminal?=C2=A0 This should be really close t=
o zero.=C2=A0=20
