I am a lurker on the list these days since I don't race much anymore but 
thought I would chime in on this discussion. While researching the 
Toyota gearboxes a few years back I noticed the W55 out of a Pickup 
truck will give you essentially a close ratio gearset and still have 5th 
as overdrive. The cases are the same. I had one of each, W56 and W55, 
for the TR3 racer. I too, had the Eaglegate bellhousing although it was 
one of their original welded units they were selling prior to the cast 
units they eventually developed. Really nice guy.... As a side note I 
put a Toyota T50 gearbox in a GT6 I raced a few years back. That 
conversion used the input shaft from the TR gearbox grafted onto the T50 
input shaft and an adapter plate to mount to the GT6 bellhousing. Very 
reliable and slick
