I used to live one mile from the surface epicenter of the 7.1 Loma
Pretia earthquake. Then the earthquake happened my TR3 was up on my
jack stands. Though my house was in shambles afterwords my TR3 remained
on its jack stands.
I use two kinds of jack stands. The heavy duty ones with the cast base
and a rectangular box kind that supports wheels. I try to keep at least
2 wheels on the car at all times so I can use the rectangular ones.
They are super stable.
The jack stands that have a base made from stamped steel are a lot more
apt to distort under load than the cast bases.
If I am using a jack stand on dirt or asphalt I lay thick plywood under
the jack stands to keep them from sinking into the dirt or asphalt. If
there is ANY noticeable slope to the ground I find a tie point or pound
in a ground anchor and attach a come along between the car and the
anchor, taking up the slack.
When my TR survived the 7.1 quake up on jack stands it was on dirt.
Plywood base under the jack stands, heavy duty cast jack stands at one
end, the rectangular box style jack stands holding up the tyres at the
other end. There was a ground slope so the TR was anchored to a ground
anchor about 8 feet uphill with a come along.
The refrigerator walked out to the middle of the kitchen as did the
stove. The cast iron kitchen sink fell through the counter. The
ceiling fan fell to the floor. All the book cases and the TV fell over.
The fireplace litterly exploded with a nine brick section ending up on
the couch about 6 feet away. All the doors in the house needed plaining
to close afterwords . But my TR stayed up on its jack stands.
Oh and one thing I do every time before going under a car on jack stands
is give the car a hard push along both axes to see if there is any give
or sign of instability. If there is, I reset the jack stands. I do not
want to be one of those people who spend their last minutes struggling
while unable to breath because their car is siting on their chest. It is
not one of my preferred ways to die.
