Don't know about the quality of jackstands sold in the US, but the ones in the
UK are sometimes (IMO) not as good as they could be. I was given a pair some
years ago as a Christmas gift and they claimed to be safe to 5 tons. Looking
at them, I wasn't too sure about the quality of the welds as there was a tear
risk with excessive loading. Just drilled some holes at critical places and
inserted high tensile hardware, then put additional welds on facing pieces
where there were none before. Also replaced the locking pins with harder
versions. Finally, repainted them. Not claiming the stands will take more than
5 tons but I'm a lot happier they would easily take that load now without
risk.
That said, don't have any old cars to use them with now :(
