Not a TR3 owner, but I did recall some information on this subject. The
following quote is from a service bulletin listing and describing the
changes that occured at TS60001.
"A Rheostat switch now supersedes the original push pull type for the
dashboard lighting together with the complete adoption of "Lucar" snap-on
type connectors on the wiring and electrical components altering the harness
and components themselves."
Upon cross-referencing this information to the a Lucas catalog, it appears
that Triumph never offered a rheostat with screw terminals for the TR3. This
would likely be a clue if the switch on your '57 has been altered by a
dealer or previous owner. Note that many smaller-market dealers sold more
than one make of foreign car, so access to Lucas switches from other cars
would have been very possible.
