Just to echo what others have said; just flip the switch as you shift and go
on.  The OD actually drops out for an instant during the shift anyway, so
you're not adding any wear & tear.

Sure, but I think you'll find that 3rd OD is so close to 4th direct that
it's not worth the effort as an extra gear.
