Although the nominal battery voltage is 12.6 volts when it's not being
charged, it takes somewhat more than that to recharge the battery.  Some
alternators do put out as much as 15 volts after startup, to ensure that the
battery is recharged quickly.  It should drop down to perhaps 14 volts when
the alternator gets hot.
