Too much heat will quickly destroy the cutting edge; it only takes a few drops of good cutting oil to keep it cool. IMO securing the work makes a difference as well. I keep an XY vice pretty much permanently installed in my drill press, so it's easier to use it than to remove it. I don't keep track of how many uses I get from a bit before resharpening (Drill Doctor); but it seems like a lot more than 4-5. The cheap HSS set I bought with the drill press over 15 years ago is still mostly original except for the smaller sizes that get broken or lost.
