My recollection is that on a TR3 the solenoid must be grounded (e.g.
fastened to the body) to operate.
For what Paul was looking at doing he could probably omit the generator &
control box/regulator and just run off the battery (if it is strong enough
to start the engine it is likely strong enough to run it for several hours).
