Art,
I have no personal experience with a failure with the switch. The 3's unit is
orignal as far as I can tell and the unit on the 4, which just returned to
service, had its terminals cleaned and works just fine (so far). The 4's
switch was really dirty but cleaned up ok. The PO of this car did have the
brake switch on the master cyl with a glob of wires running under the engine,
but it looked like crap. The switch was mounted cob-job style and looked like
crap. I am not sure why the PO did this, since the switch worked just fine.
Anyway, as Randall mentioned, the switch was relocated to the master cyl. on
the later TR4 and 4A but that would require running the wires to that area.
I am guessing the internal contacts are not contacting, maybe a seal or spring
gone from old age.
If it was me, I would get a new one and try to put some protection around the
connections, such as wrapping the 2 wire harness with some of that new
flexible harness stuff they sell at the parts store.
I used a bunch of that stuff on both the brake and generator sub-harnesses to
offer some heat insullation on the 4.
If I ever get a round tuit, I will do the same on the 3.
