Today I thought I had almost finished the job of repairing my TR3's
Driver's
side- Outer Footwell Panel.
But, I am somewhat concerned about the welding job I did on this
homemade
outer footwell panel's partial replacement. This panel was mig welded to the
front of the new inner sill. While this weld is holding fine while the car is
motionless, this might not be the case when I decide to go 'dune jumping.'
Thus, I'm hoping somebody will endorse my idea of beefing-up this weld
with
an external support brace. This brace will stand vertically between the
outerfootwell panel and the fender. (QUESTION: How many inches are proably
between these two?) This upright support will be located BEHIND the sealer
plate and could only be seen if one removes the front fender. The bottom of
this squareish rod will attach to a pre-drilled hole in the new inner sill.
It will stand vertically about 24" (just a guess)from this sill up to ontop of
the driver's side enclosure of the pedal area.(This 4" CORNER is located
underneath the two caged mounting nuts for the windscreen wiper motor). Thus
it will act like a giant C-clamp keeping the bottom edge of the sill a
constant distance from the top of the cabin's enclosure (but not inside the
cabin) without ever being seen! Normally both the front and outer footwell
panels do this, however, due to dubious metal and dubious welding, this giant
c-clamp should be a welcomed back-up for the inner sill to outer footwell
panel's welded joint!!
