Jim said "The problem isn't the hands not used for driving, it's the mind
not used for driving."
And while I can't speak for the rest of the country, the distractions while
driving are not limited to cell phones... you have the folks who are
applying make-up, eating, reading books and newspapers, looking down for
some undetermined thing on the floorboard, and numerous other distractions.
Of course you also have the jerks who feel it is their right to move over
because they spotted nine and a half feet in between you and the car in
front.
The people who think they are part of traffic control and thus are justified
to go approximately 15 mph slower than the flow of traffic in the left lane.
The blinker bandits. I guess this could apply to both the folks who travel
hundred of miles with their blinker on as well as the ones who must have
Lucas electrics on their Hondas and Mercedes since their blinker never
works.
Then there are the people whose expression tells you that they are max'd out
on brainpower just traveling down the road. You can tell by that look of
total fear.
My point to all of this is that while people talking on their cell phones
can be very dangerous, it's far from the only dangerous offences that U.S.
drivers display.
I do have a hands-free device for my phone and use it. But I also wonder
just what the hell these people did before cell phones. Is there that much
conversation that must take place while on the road?
