Definitely not normal.  The inner ends of the shafts basically bear on each
other (through a small block in the differential), so the clearance should be
the same on both sides even if the shim packs are not equal thickness.  It
sounds to me like something is seriously askew, like perhaps one of the axle
tubes is pulling out of the pumpkin, and investigation is in order.
