The CVT transmission type has been used by Ford in Europe on earlier Fiesta 
models and certainly with Subaru on another small car. It's not a new 
concept and was used extensively by a Dutch car manufacturer, DAF, later 
bought out by Volvo. Go to the link below and you should find your answers
