I covered mine in leather (which is I think what would have been on there originally). Can't see it in the pics, but the metal is held to the wood by a couple of small nails thru holes that were already in the metal piece. Easy to lift the cover away just enough to pull the nails once it is stretched into place. Leather soaked in warm water is fairly pliable.
