Sounds like the new battery box did not have the drain hole. The center (or so) of the battery box had a 1/4" OD pipe welded to the bottom. A hose hooked to that pipe, then passed through a hole in the top of the transmission cover. The hose was long enough to just hang lower than the bottom of the transmission.
