You are trying to get it to stay on?  It fits in the groove on the  block.  
You still need to use this for the spin on, the beauty is with the  spin on, 
once it's in the groove, it stays there.  I agree, see if you can  dig out any 
that are in there.  If there aren't, and you still have  difficulty, put some 
STP or like lubricant on the rubber and that will stick it  in place while you 
position the filter.
