The safest thing to do is remove all the electronic devices. This means the
Alternator and radio. And depending on the vintage of your TR6 you may have
other devices as well. For example the 74 model has a seatbelt interlock that
should be removed as well. And any aftermarket device will have to be
evaluated.
If that seems like too much trouble the prudent thing would be to disconnect
the battery hot lead and connect it to chassis. This will offer a level of
protection for the alternator.
I'm sure there are welders out there who will say "I weld on cars all the
time with no problems" to which the proper response it "yet." An ounce of
prevention is worth a pound of cure.
