People have used anything and everything up to and including STP (well,
racers anyway) and substituting heavier oil is a common method of tuning shocks.
There is a plug in the top that you can remove and fill with oil using a
funnel. Just top it up and then drive a while. Any air trapped below will
work
its way out fairly quickly.
