Home Depot (or Ace Hardware) threaded rod is grade 2. It is also a fastener
thread. It works and it is convenient but it is not ideal. Harder grade of
threaded rod is available from McMaster-Carr, but then so is Acme thread. I
went that route in a fit of perfectionism (which comes over me on rare
occasion). I also got a thrust bearing. The pitch is more aggressive which
means less
turning (I don't use an impact wrench). After about half a dozen uses I see
no signs of wear.
But Home Depot rod is cheap, readily available and expendable. So keeping
replacement rods around is not a problem.
