I don't know that this is strictly helpful, Tom, but my garage "attic stairs" is
a 24' extension ladder pivoted at one end. Since my garage ceiling is only 8',
I use a simple hook to hold the ladder up out of way when it's not being used.
But it would be easy enough to rig a rope & pulley to hold it, if it were next
to a wall or pillar where the rope could be tied off. Or even a cheap power
hoist ?
For me, it's also a convenient place to store my rarely-used extension ladder.
The pivot is a length of 1" black iron pipe laying across two rafters and
threaded through the tubular top step on the ladder, so to remove the extension
ladder for use I just climb up on a stepladder (stored in a different place in
the garage) and slide the pipe out of the ladder.
