I had the exact same condition... it was so nasty I drove to the coin-op 
car wash, jacked up one corner, pulled the wheel & hub and had at it.  
Lots of Brakleen (cheap generic house brand) and their pressure washer.  
Sort of depends on where you live -- didn't look like a mess I wanted to 
make in the street or my garage.
