Don't feel stupid at all! In my experience that dang canister will not come
out unless you remove something. I have retained all my canisters as
original so I may not be the one to give you advise here. I know I have taken
them
out to paint them and most likely removed the fuel pump, steering column, but
I think there is a way to get them out from the bottom (slave cylinder). I
am sure someone will have the quick release method.
