If you have to pull the engine, then I definitely vote for together.  If you
only need the gearbox out, then only pull the gearbox.

The factory installed lifting plates on the later TR engines, but not on the
earlier ones.  None of my TRs have had the plates, so I've never used them.
Generally, I've just used a length of stout chain, fastened under two head nuts,
front and rear.  A "spreader" is probably a good idea (so the chain pulls
directly up rather than at an angle), so I've picked up one of those "load
leveler" things that is a long bar (for the spreader) and has a threaded bar to
move the attachment point to the hoist (to tilt the engine).

But I've always used a bare chain at an angle before, and it works OK.  I use a
big punch to slip the individual links of the chain through the hook on the
hoist to tilt the engine as required; then drop the punch through the link to
hold the position.

Good idea !  I did that once, on my first (non-LBC) car.  The scars don't show
at all now.
