Bill:
My early TR4 has a good preowned no-hole no-neck radiator, a yellow
plastic fan, and a home-made aluminum shroud. It seems to blow the cold
out of my radiator as fast as it comes in. My heater is not as warm as
it used to be before my fan and radiator replacement, but it's warmer
than any of my other cars. Doesn't take much to keep it cozy with the
top up or the tonneau on. In fact I rarely use the heater fan because
the vent pushes plenty of heat out -- does that work on a 3?
If you already have a 185 thermostat, I'd think your next step should be
to replace or upgrade the heater core. I tried the cardboard in front of
the radiator, but there's no way to control it if you actually need the
entire radiator. You may be able to find a radiator curtain as fitted to
some old trucks -- Fred will remember. ;) Actually a radiator curtain
was available as an option on my '66 Volvo 122S to help warm it up
quicker in cold weather. It isn't on my car, but it would have had a
chain to operate it that hung down under the dash.
