Well, arguably it was the colonists that felt the need to be contrary ... the BS
standard was there first (along with Whitworth threads and so on).

This is a philosophical question IMO ... there is no hard technical reason to
chose one or the other as long as you're careful to choose the correct rating.
However, the American fuses are very slightly larger than the British ones,
which may cause problems in some fuse holders. ISTR Dave Massey said American
fuses don't fit well in the holders on his TR8, so there's one reason. But they
seem to fit just fine in my Stag and TR3/A.
I like to use American fuses. One reason is because they're easier to find
(hence easier to pick up a replacement spare along the road on a long trip).
But also, if someone else happens to be driving the car when a fuse lets go,
they can pull into any gas station and have the grease monkey replace the fuse,
without having to know anything about British vs American fuses. Take an AGC 20
out of the holder, put an AGC 20 back in ... no worries about someone less
versed in the vagaries of British cars looking at a 35 amp Lucas fuse and
replacing it with an AGC 35.
Which is not to say that's "right", it's just my personal preference. Please,
no flames from originality freaks who search out the correct Lucas fuses with
the paper insert !
