Is it possible that the smoke is just a coincidence that is unrelated to the distributor issue? Wouldn't a broken or cracked ring exhibit these symptoms? Loss of cylinder pressure that recovers if you add some oil to the cylinder? What about a leakdown test? I am by no means an expert, but I was just wondering out loud.
