Once again, I am not familiar with the particulars of the wiring of the 1980 
Spitfire fan circuit but a few general comments.  Check the grounds.  If the 
fan and the fan relay share a ground and the ground is problematic this could 
cause what you are seeing.

The power source to the relay is most likely a large brown wire.  If you ran 
a different wire back to the battery to replace this feed you could eliminate 
problems resulting from problematic connections in the brown wire circuit.

Try these and report back.
