The Triumph factory did update the distributor spark curve in the middle of 
TR4/4A production (to Lucas distributor 40795). The 'cast' engine improvements 
you mention below, were introduced just before and after the 40795 distributor 
was spec'd.

Doesn't it strike you as odd that they changed the cam timing, intake and
exhaust manifolds, and combustion chamber shape ... but not the optimum spark
curve? Randall
