This is a recurring issue with Brand Lotus alloy wheels for Europas. Part
of the problem is that the stock nuts are often unbelievably eccentric. The
tapered steel seats on my BWA Sportstars are fine. Panasports are fine, I
hear. If there are no tapered seats on the KN Minators, I'd probably avoid
them.

Not if the balancing tech has a brain and the proper equipment. Some alloy
wheels don't even have fully-machined center holes except where the hub cap
fits on. Some wheels need to be located via the bolt holes.
By the same token, not all wire wheels are created equal. The Daytons they
are making now are balanceable by putting them between two cones. Don't try
that with a Dayton made before (1990? darned Oldtimers Disease) or with a
Dunlop of any age.
