This may be the suggestion from the manual, but that method works only
if the bearing races are completely and fully seated.
For a long time, whenever doing a rebuild of the front bearing, I've
used the following procedure: drive the outer races home, fully grease
the new bearings, then assemble and without allowing the wheel to turn,
torque the bearing retainer nut to about 50 lb/ft. Then slack off the
bearing retainer nut and adjust the free play according to the manual.
This ensures that everything is in place as it should be before setting
free play. The races and bearings will tolerate the load without
deformation, as long as there's no attempt to turn the wheel while
compressed, and the felt seal will be compressed adequately to present
no problems later.
Cheers.
