Virtually all U.S. cars from the 1940's up to the automatic trans had 
shrink-ons, as do most construction and farm machines.

My theory regarding why they went to bolt-on is that Standard didn't have 
machining capability to hold that large a diameter to the tolerance needed.

Probably wrong, but that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.
