>I'm up to my ears in bits of clutch, but I've hit a snag. The book says
"remove circlip & pushrod". Yup. Then it says "remove the piston, seal,
etc.". Nope. It doesn't come out: I can push it back against the spring,
then when I let it go it seems to hit some kind of stop. Am I missing
something obvious?

No, what you don't see is the line of crud at the end of the piston travel
which is why it doesn't erturn any further than the end of it's normal
stroke. If you rap it on the work bench, open end down you can use inertia
to move the piston past that point. Then tap on the opposite end with a
soft hammer until the end of the piston protrudes enough to grasp it with a
pair of pliers.
Good luck
