Racers have been using nitrogen for years.  Not only in tires but also in 
their air-powered tools such as the impact guns used for changing tires/wheels 
during the race.

I know a guy who used to work for a NASCAR team.  His job was changing the 
right front tire during the race.  He showed me the "gun" he used and told me 
that gun had never been powered by anything but nitrogen.
