I have seen this exact problem with a failed pertronics ignition unit. Personally, I would replace this first. Also, I have seen a coil go bad. It the one case I saw, the coil got VERY VERY hot. (i.e. blisters) when it failed. When it cooled off it was fine again until it was run for 10 minutes and got really hot again. A new coil solved that one.
