Bill, I have a couple of thoughts.  Unfortunately, no, you won't be able to
pull the piston past the crankshaft from the bottom.  You'll have to remove
the pan and the crankshaft.

More importantly, at the top of every used cylinder or liner is a ridge
formed by metal wearing away from the sides where the rings ride, but
stopping abruptly at the apex of the piston movement.  A new piston is like
as not to pound into that ridge at high rpm and break your rings.

My advice is, if you have to delve that deep into your engine, pull it out
all the way and go through it.  (If I can do it myself, anybody can.)
Besides, from your numbers below, you may have a burnt valve, meaning a head
problem not a ring problem.
