Apparently at one time, the hole for the oil passage to the head was only in
one end of the gasket. Those gaskets obviously could only be installed one
way round. When Payen started making them with two oil holes, they didn't
bother going back to correct the book <g>

I believe that one way leaves a crimped seam hanging out into the water
jacket. Don't know for sure that it would have made a difference, but I've
removed at least one blown head gasket that was blown through that seam,
where it hung out in space.
